Arriving at Port Augusta, the self-proclaimed gateway to the Outback, was a day I'll never forget. The temperature had been steadily rising from the moment we left Adelaide, as we made our way around the Yorke Peninsula, but as we drove into Port Augusta, the mercury seemed to make a dramatic shift from hot to unbelievably, stupidly, ridiculously, bloody, stinky HOT! After quickly taking solace in a BIG W store, (Yep, shops! We couldn't believe it either!) we found out that the actual outside temperature was a measly 38 degrees... And this "isn't even really THAT hot," the girl behind the register was telling us. O-kay.
Other than having extremely pleasant weather, Port Augusta seems to be the place where travellers pass through on their way to somewhere even hotter i.e the Nullabor or the Northern Territory via Cooper Pedy. So with it's couple of shops more than most other towns in South Australia, a Macca's, two Subways and a couple of caravan parks, this place may seem like a mini paradise to some.

Looking for a bit of relief from the heat, we decided to check-in to the caravan park early (You have a pool? We'll take it!) but unfortunately extreme heat in semi-desert country means huge water restrictions and not a lot of grass. Check out the lushious, welcoming caravan park...

Obviously we only checked in for the one night at this little slice of 'paradise'.
Yours sweating it up in a South Australian hell-hole,
Odette

During our visit to the Flinders Ranges in August 2006 we stayed at Port Augusta, the park we used (Big4) looked a bit greener and shadier than the photo on your blog. Our main reason for staying was to have a look at the arid land botanic garden.
We have noticed that SA is going through record heat for March, so glad we are quite a bit cooler in Tasmania.
